Crowns & Bridges
Restoring Strength, Structure and Missing Teeth
Dental crowns and bridges are restorative treatments used to repair damaged teeth or replace missing teeth.
At Junction Village Dental, we recommend crowns or bridges when a tooth requires additional structural support or when a missing tooth/teeth need to be replaced. Treatment planning is always based on careful assessment and discussion of available options.
Our approach focuses on preserving natural tooth structure wherever possible while restoring function and stability.
Dental Crowns
A crown is a custom-made restoration that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth.
Crowns may be recommended when:
- A tooth has extensive decay
- A large filling has failed
- A tooth is cracked or weakened
- Root canal treatment has been completed
- Significant tooth wear is present
By covering and supporting the remaining tooth structure, a crown can help restore function and reduce the risk of further fracture.
The Crown Process
Crown treatment typically involves two appointments.
First Appointment
- Assessment and diagnosis
- Tooth preparation
- Impressions or digital scanning
- Placement of a temporary crown
Second Appointment
- Removal of the temporary crown
- Fitting and adjustment of the final crown
- Cementation of the restoration
Timeframes may vary depending on individual circumstances.
Dental Bridges
A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring an artificial tooth to neighbouring teeth.
Bridges may be considered when:
- One or more teeth are missing
- Adjacent teeth are suitable to provide support
- An implant is not suitable or preferred
A bridge is custom-made to fit securely and restore chewing function.
The Bridge Process
The process for a bridge is similar to crown treatment and usually involves:
- Assessment and discussion of suitability
- Preparation of supporting teeth
- Impressions or digital scanning
- Temporary restoration placement
- Fitting of the final bridge
We will explain the process in detail prior to treatment.
Materials Used
Crowns and bridges can be made from a range of materials, including:
- Porcelain or ceramic
- Porcelain fused to metal
- Other restorative materials as clinically indicated
The most appropriate material will be recommended based on the tooth’s position, functional requirements and individual preferences.
Caring for Crowns and Bridges
Restorations require ongoing care and maintenance.
Regular brushing, flossing and professional examinations are important to:
- Maintain gum health
- Monitor the supporting teeth
- Assess the integrity of the restoration
We will provide personalised guidance on caring for your restoration.
When Are Alternatives Considered?
In some cases, other treatment options may be discussed, such as:
- Dental implants
- Removable partial dentures
- Monitoring where appropriate
We take a conservative and individualised approach to treatment planning.
