Custom Dental Appliances
Individually Designed Appliances to Support Comfort, Protection and Stability
Custom dental appliances can play an important role in maintaining oral health, protecting teeth and supporting comfort.
At Junction Village Dental, we provide a range of professionally designed and fitted appliances based on clinical assessment and individual needs.
Each appliance is custom-made to ensure appropriate fit and function.
Retainers
Retainers are commonly worn following orthodontic treatment to help maintain tooth alignment.
Teeth can naturally shift over time. Retainers are designed to support long-term stability after braces or aligner therapy.
We provide:
- Removable retainers
- Fixed (bonded) retainers
- Replacement retainers
Regular review is recommended to ensure retainers remain effective and in good condition.
Lingual Wires (Fixed Retainers)
A lingual wire is a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth to help maintain alignment following orthodontic treatment.
Because the wire is positioned on the inside surface of the teeth, it is not visible when smiling. Periodic review is important to ensure it remains intact and clean.
Custom Mouthguards
Custom mouthguards are designed to help protect teeth during sport and physical activity.
A professionally fitted mouthguard:
- Is made from an impression or digital scan of your teeth
- Is designed to fit securely
- Allows for clearer speech and easier breathing compared to over-the-counter options
Mouthguards are recommended for both children and adults participating in contact or high-impact sports.
We assess fit and review mouthguards periodically, particularly for growing children.
Occlusal Splints (Night Guards)
Occlusal splints, often referred to as night guards, are used to support patients who clench or grind their teeth (bruxism).
Clenching and grinding may contribute to:
- Tooth wear
- Jaw discomfort
- Headaches
- Cracked teeth
A custom splint is worn while sleeping and is designed to reduce stress on the teeth and jaw structures.
Assessment is required to determine suitability and appropriate design.
Mandibular Advancement Splints (Snoring Management)
Mandibular advancement splints are oral appliances that may be used in the management of snoring and certain forms of sleep-disordered breathing.
These appliances gently reposition the lower jaw forward during sleep, which may help maintain airway space in appropriate cases.
Before providing this type of appliance:
- A clinical assessment is required
- Medical history is reviewed
- Referral for sleep studies may be recommended where appropriate
In some cases, collaboration with a medical practitioner or sleep physician may be advised.
Suitability is determined on an individual basis.
The Custom Appliance Process
The process generally includes:
- Clinical assessment and discussion
- Impressions or digital scanning
- Appliance fabrication
- Fitting appointment
- Follow-up review
Clear instructions are provided regarding care and maintenance.
Why Custom Matters
Custom appliances are designed specifically for your teeth and bite.
Over-the-counter alternatives may not provide the same level of fit or support. A professionally fitted appliance allows for appropriate assessment, monitoring and adjustment over time.
