Teeth Whitening
Professional Assessment and Whitening Options in Newcastle
Teeth whitening is a treatment designed to reduce staining and lighten the natural shade of teeth.
At Junction Village Dental, whitening is only recommended following a clinical examination to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy and suitable for treatment.
Our focus is on safe, evidence-based care and informed decision-making.
Why Do Teeth Become Discoloured?
Tooth colour can change over time for a variety of reasons, including:
- Natural ageing
- Coffee, tea and red wine
- Smoking
- Certain medications
- Trauma
- Enamel wear
Not all types of discolouration respond equally to whitening, which is why assessment is important.
Is Whitening Suitable for Everyone?
Teeth whitening may not be appropriate in some situations.
Whitening is generally not recommended if:
- There is active tooth decay
- Gum disease is present
- There are untreated cracks or fractures
- Teeth are heavily restored
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
Additionally, whitening does not change the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers.
A clinical examination allows us to determine whether whitening is suitable for you.
Whitening Options
We provide professionally supervised whitening options following assessment.
Take-Home Whitening
Custom-made trays are fabricated to fit your teeth. A whitening gel is worn in the trays at home over a prescribed period.
This method allows gradual shade change under professional guidance.
In-Chair Whitening – Express Option
In-chair whitening may be available for suitable patients following clinical assessment.
We offer a unique 30-minute express whitening option designed for convenience. This treatment is performed in the practice and may be suitable for busy patients who want faster results and less hassle than take-home whitening.
Suitability depends on your oral health, existing restorations and individual goals. We will discuss whether this option is appropriate for you during your consultation.
What to Expect
Whitening results vary between individuals.
Some patients may notice a lighter tooth shade, while others may experience more subtle change depending on:
- The original tooth colour
- The type of staining
- Enamel thickness
- Lifestyle factors
Temporary tooth sensitivity can occur during whitening. We provide guidance to help manage this if needed.
Maintaining Results
Whitening is not permanent.
The longevity of results depends on:
- Dietary habits
- Smoking status
- Oral hygiene
- Natural ageing
Periodic maintenance may be discussed where appropriate.
A Conservative Approach
Before recommending whitening, we assess:
- Overall oral health
- Stability of restorations
- Risk of sensitivity
- Alternative options if staining is internal or structural
Our goal is to ensure whitening is suitable and performed safely.
