Dental Fillings

Restoring Teeth Affected by Decay or Minor Damage

Dental fillings are used to restore teeth that have been affected by decay, wear or minor fractures.

At Junction Village Dental, our focus is on early identification of tooth decay and conservative treatment wherever possible. When a filling is required, we aim to restore the strength and function of the tooth while preserving as much healthy structure as possible.

Why Might a Filling Be Needed?

A filling may be recommended if:

  • Tooth decay (a cavity) is present
  • An existing filling has worn down or fractured
  • A small chip or crack has occurred
  • Tooth structure has been lost due to wear

Decay occurs when bacteria in dental plaque produce acids that gradually weaken the enamel. Early detection allows for smaller, more conservative restorations.

What Happens During a Filling Appointment?

Every appointment begins with examination and diagnosis.

Where appropriate, radiographs (x-rays) may be taken to assess the extent of decay. If a filling is recommended, we will:

  • Explain the findings
  • Discuss the proposed treatment
  • Answer any questions

During the procedure:

  • The affected area of the tooth is carefully cleaned
  • Decay is removed
  • The tooth is restored with filling material
  • The bite is checked and adjusted if needed

Local anaesthetic may be used where clinically indicated to ensure patient comfort.

Types of Fillings

We primarily use tooth-coloured (composite resin) fillings.

Composite materials are designed to blend with natural tooth structure and bond directly to the tooth. This allows for a more conservative preparation in many cases.

The most appropriate material will be discussed based on the individual tooth and clinical findings.

Caring for a Filled Tooth

After a filling is placed, good oral hygiene and regular examinations remain important.

We will provide personalised advice on:

  • Brushing and flossing techniques
  • Dietary considerations
  • Ongoing maintenance

Fillings can last many years, though their longevity depends on factors such as oral hygiene, bite forces and tooth position.

When a Filling May Not Be Enough

If decay or fracture is extensive, a larger restoration such as a crown may be recommended instead of a filling.

We will discuss all appropriate treatment options so you can make an informed decision.

Preventing Future Decay

Our philosophy centres on prevention.

Regular check-ups allow early identification of decay before it progresses. We also provide guidance on:

  • Fluoride use
  • Oral hygiene
  • Diet
  • Fissure sealants where appropriate

Preventative care plays an important role in reducing the likelihood of future restorations.

Book an Assessment

If you have been advised you may need a filling, or are experiencing sensitivity or discomfort, our team can provide assessment and discuss appropriate treatment options.
